WORLD PRESS PHOTO 2019
Since 1955 the World Press Photo Contest has recognized professional photographers for the best pictures contributing to the past year of visual journalism.
For the 62nd edition of the contest, the World Press Photo Foundation introduced a major new award: the World Press Photo Story of the Year. On a par with the World Press Photo of the Year, this new award honors the photographer whose visual creativity and skills produced a story with excellent editing and sequencing that captures or represents an event or issue of great journalistic importance in 2018.
The winner of the World Press Photo of the Year 2019, selected by a jury – covering a wide range of photography backgrounds, from six global regions, with an equal number of men and women – is John Moore. Its picture Crying girls on the border shows Honduran toddler Yanela Sanchez cries as she and her mother, Sandra Sanchez, are taken into custody by US border officials in McAllen, Texas, USA.
For the category World Press Story of the Year the winner is the photographer Pieter Ten Hooper, with The migrant carovan, a project that tells the story of the thousands of Central American migrants that in October and November joined a caravan heading to the United States border.
The Italian winners are: Lorenzo Tugnoli, with Yemen Crisis, first prize stories in the General News category; Marco Gualazzini with The Lake Chad Crisis, first prize stories in the Environment category; Daniele Volpe with Still Life Volcano, second prize singles in the General News category.
