The international jury of the 56° World Press Photo Contest selected a photo by Paul Hansen for the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter as the World Press Photo of the Year 2013. The images shows the bodies of two-year-old Suhaib Hijazi and his elder brother Muhammad, almost four, carried by their uncles to a mosque for their funeral, in Gaza City. The children were killed when their house was destroyed by an Israeli airstrike on 19 November. The strike also killed their father, Fouad, and severely injured their mother and four other siblings.

The jury awarded 54 photographers, in nine categories, from 32 countries: Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Iran, Italy, Jordan, Malesia, Palestine, The Netherlands, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Serbia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, UK, Us and Vietnam.
