Cabinet fantastique – Lighting techniques for portrait photography and aesthetics of the photographic illusion

A two-days intensive workshop on visual and conceptual analisys of lighting for portait photography with Paolo Verzone and Azzurra Immediato. The first part of the workshop will be developed through practical shooting exercises, in order to deepen the different lighting techniques and offer participants the opportunity to learn how to use different light sources (natural light / flash / continuous light) both separately and simultaneously. The second will be focused on the criticism and aesthetics of the image, linked above all to the portrait, through the vision and the student’s portfolio reviews.

Day 1

– Student portfolio reviews through the aesthetics of the image with Azzurra Immediato and presentation of Paolo Verzone’s work.

– Analysis of alternative lighting sources and their practical application.

– Shooting with daylight and flash in interiors and outside.

Day 2

– Shooting, review, editing and screening of students’ workshop output with Paolo Verzone and Azzurra Immediato.

Requested equipment: camera with a tripod, computer, card reader and 1 camera + 1 lens (preferably standard focal length). Students may present their work in printed form (prints, books) or digital (computer).
Costs: €300. Room and board not included.

Born in 1967 in Turin, and based between Italy, France and Spain Paolo Verzone has been a member of Agence VU since 2003. For almost 30 years, Paolo Verzone has been photographing the world around him. At his beginnings, he covers the news as it appears in the pages of European and international magazines: a world in perpetual motion, ever so changing, which he observes with the distance of those not bound to the emergency of the moment.With rigor and eclecticism, he goes from news assignments to long term projects, from embedded documentary stories to posed portraits. From black and white to color, as well, and finally from analog to digital. Over time, his interest of the world is drawn more and more towards its people. He develops demanding sets of photographs made with a medium format view camera, that imposes a focus on the subject, presented full-length. Whether it is a set of portraits of Europeans at the beach, Seeuropeans (1994 / 2002), or the Moscow Project (1991 / 2011), produced in collaboration with Alessandro Albert, the sum of the people photographed reflect upon the multiplicity and singularity of each individual. With his project on the cadets of the main European military academies, started in 2009, Paolo Verzone maps us contemporary Europe through a part of its youth, while questioning the European identity. Paolo Verzone was awarded at World Press Photo in 2000, 2009, and 2015. His photographs are part of different collections at the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, and the Instituto Nazionale della Grafica, in Rome.

Historian and art critic born in Benevento. Azzurra Immediato lives in Bologna where she studied Art at the DAMS and History of Medieval and Modern Art at the Alma Mater Studiorum. She comes to the contemporary after years of work in HR, collaborating with young online magazines, writing about art, design, theater and cinema. She has followed and follows several emerging artists and not, for several years cooperating with some galleries as a critic, especially in the work of designing, writing and editing catalogs and art books and for monographic and collective exhibitions; she also works for exhibitions and artistic projects of a different nature. Her passion for photography allows her to tend towards the search for new languages ​​and in recent years, in addition to her affection, she has curated and directed some exhibitions in collaboration with Italian and foreign photographers, in national museums or festivals, together with charity and art therapy from university patronage. It assigns to culture a central role in human existence and to the curiosity for the world, a value that must never be forgotten.
