SONY WORLD PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS 2019
in collaborazione con Sony
For the first time the entire exhibition of the Sony World Photography Award 2019 is in Italy, presented in a digital installation.
The twelfth edition of the competition saw a new record of participation, with 326.997 applications submitted by photographers from 195 different countries.
The result is an interesting collection of the best contemporary works created over the last 12 months.
Once again this year Italy triumphed at the Awards with four photographers who excelled in the categories of the Professional competition: Alessandro Grassani is the winner of the Sport category with the Boxing Against Violence series: The Female Boxers of Goma, which tells how boxing represents a mean of supporting themselves and a safe haven for many women in Goma (North Kivu province, Democratic Republic of the Congo). The duo formed by Jean-Marc Caimi and Valeria Piccinini triumphed in the Discovery category with the Güle Güle series, which means “goodbye” in Turkish, dedicated to Istanbul and the most peculiar aspects of the city. Massimo Giovannini took second place in the Portrait category with Henkō, a Japanese word meaning “change” and “variable and unusual light”, through which he tackled the theme of light and how it can alter the perspective of objects. Within the Open category, which awards the best shot in over 60 countries, the National Award was given to Nicola Vincenzo Rinaldi, a street photography enthusiast, for the image The Hug which, as the artist himself explains, “ portrays an enveloping embrace: only the feet escape the grip”.
