Photolux with Paolo Verzone for the Covid-19 emergency
Photolux presented an online and offline exhibition, launched with the aim to continue the exploration of the photographic universe even in these times when art is physically inaccessible. Aurora Borealis presented a preview of 9 photos by Paolo Verzone taken on the Svalbard Islands.
The exhibition, set up at the Photolux headquarters, has been open, but closed to the public, from 7th to 13th April 2020.
Why “open” a photographic exhibition that will be closed to the public? Why this contradiction?
For two reasons:
> due to the lockdown some photographic exhibitions already in progress have been temporarily closed to the public; others had their opening postponed, since it was scheduled precisely for the day when this seclusion began. This one, however, set up as it is, has been the only exhibition that cannot be seen by anyone. Nevertheless, it had a presentation and was visible through the social channels of Photolux. It also represented the preview of a bigger exhibition which will see the light next year on the occasion of the launch of a larger work commissioned to the author by “MARE”, the German publishing house which will also publish the exhibition book in 2021
> each of the photographs on display, printed on Hahnemühle Baryta paper in 60x80cm format, signed and authenticated, has been for sale at the price of € 1500 in a limited edition of 3 copies, realized exclusively for this occasion.
We collected 6.000 € that, net of the printing costs, will be donated to the Protezione Civile to support the purchase of medical supplies needed for the Coronavirus emergency. A small contribution for the photographs of a great author with which we will be able to offer concrete help to those who work in the front line of the epidemic.
The exhibition consists of 9 photographs. With the exception of a large format landscape (70x105cm) which represents a northern lights – and gives the exhibition its title – the other images (60x80cm format) are portraits of members of the Norwegian Coast Guard, aboard the ship “KV SVALBARD” on patrol in the waters of the Svalbard Islands.
